Video Lesson: Developer Professional Cert-Prep Course Prerequisites

Prepare Magento developers for the Adobe Commerce Developer Professional Certification by outlining essential prerequisites and recommending foundational and advanced Magento courses for successful exam readiness.

Lesson Content

Before we dive into the course materials and get you ready for that Adobe Commerce Professional Developer Certification, we need to make sure you're set up for success. Let's figure out where you stand right now.

Where are you now?

We need to take an honest look at your current Magento experience. This isn't about being critical, but about making sure you don't struggle through the rest of the course, just because you skipped this important step.

So be real with yourself here.

Magento newbie

If you're new to Magento... welcome! I love your enthusiasm about jumping in and getting certified. But I need to be straight with you: this course is built for developers who already have a solid grasp of Magento fundamentals.

We won't be covering any foundational concepts here. Zero. None. I've spent years creating courses that do exactly that:

  • Magento 2 Coding Kickstart: This is where you need to start. It covers the key programming concepts in Magento 2 and shows you how the platform actually works.

  • Magento 2 Power Theming: You'll learn how to build and customize Magento themes. Understanding theming is crucial — it's a huge part of working with Magento.

  • UI Components in Magento 2: UI components are the heart of Magento's frontend and backend. This course breaks them down so you can navigate and customize Magento's interface with confidence.

I have tons of other courses too, and honestly, I recommend taking ALL of them. They'll give you the foundation you absolutely need to pass these exams. Once you work through those courses and the concepts start clicking, you'll be ready for this certification course.

Intermediate to advanced developers

If you've gone through the courses, hopefully you've also gotten your hands dirty with real projects. The test has nuances you can't really teach — you have to experience them yourself.

If you've been learning Magento on your own but haven't worked on live sites with an agency or merchant, check out the Next Steps lessons at the end of my premium courses. They'll give you practical projects to build that real-world experience. Nothing beats actually coding something yourself.

Even with experience, here's what I recommend:

  • Revisit Complex Topics: Certain areas of Magento can trip anyone up. Check out UI Components in Magento 2, Transform Magento 2 Admin Grids & Forms, and Customize the Magento 2 Checkout. These are advanced topics that catch even experienced developers off guard.

  • Identify Your Weak Spots: Be honest about what needs work. Maybe EAV and database schemas are fuzzy, or maybe dependency injection tricks like argument substitution aren't second nature yet. Review those areas.

  • Hands-On Practice: Real-world experience is irreplaceable. Push yourself to work on projects using parts of Magento you're less comfortable with. This practical work makes all the difference. Again, those Next Steps lessons in my premium courses will give you project ideas that really stretch your skills.

Are you ready?

I hope this doesn't feel intimidating. If it doesn't... great! You're probably ready to start this course and get certified. If you think you're almost there but not quite... here's my advice: try it anyway. You might be more ready than you think.

I'm a big believer in faking it until you make it. When I started M.academy, I didn't know nearly as much as people thought I did about Magento. Worked out pretty well for me. So even if you don't feel ready right now... you might actually be.

One of the first things we'll do is take an assessment. If you completely bomb it and feel like you need more foundational study, absolutely take a step back, study up, and come back. But even if you don't do great on the practice exam, you might still be ready for the real thing, and there's no way to know for sure.

I didn't even score 50% on my first practice exam, and I passed the real one after some focused studying. Sometimes you just have to move forward even when you don't feel 100% ready.

With that said... let's look at the roadmap for this course, then jump into that skills assessment.
