Set up keyboard shortcuts with keymaps in PhpStorm

Learn how to customize keymaps by assigning keyboard shortcuts to frequently used actions.

Lesson Content

PhpStorm includes a database IDE, but opening it through View -> Tool Windows -> Database takes several clicks. You can make this faster by assigning a keyboard shortcut to the Database tool window.

Open PhpStorm’s preferences from PhpStorm -> Preferences, then select Keymap. Search for the action you want to configure, or browse to Tool Windows -> Database.

Right-click Database and select Add Keyboard Shortcut. Press the shortcut you want to use. For example, Cmd+D might seem like a good choice for Database, but PhpStorm commonly uses it to duplicate lines. If you use that action frequently, choose a different shortcut instead.

For example, use Cmd+M as a shortcut for MySQL or MariaDB. PhpStorm may warn that the shortcut is already assigned to Minimize in the Main Menu. If you don't use that action, click OK, then confirm that you want to remove the existing assignment.

Click OK to save the keymap change, then close the preferences. Press Cmd+M to open the Database tool window, and press it again to hide the window.

You can use the same process for any PhpStorm action that you access frequently. Assigning shortcuts to menu actions saves time and avoids repeatedly navigating through the application menus.
