If you're a Magento developer thinking about getting certified, you're in the right place. I've been working with Magento for over 15 years and have helped hundreds of developers prepare for these exams through M.academy's courses.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the Adobe Commerce (Magento) certification program; from the available exams and their costs, to study tips and whether certification is actually worth the investment.
What is a Magento Certified Developer?
A Magento Certified Developer is someone who has passed one or more Adobe Commerce certification exams, proving they have real expertise in the Magento platform. The certification program covers Magento's architecture, best practices, and core functionality, which validates that a developer can build, customize, and maintain Magento-based e-commerce sites at a professional level.
Being certified isn't just about passing a test, though. It signals to employers and merchants that you understand the platform deeply enough to work on complex projects, mentor other developers, and deliver high-quality solutions. In a competitive job market, that kind of validation goes a long way.
Available Adobe Commerce Certifications
Adobe offers three tiers of Magento certification: Professional, Expert, and Master. These have all been branded under "Adobe Commerce" since Adobe acquired Magento. Each tier targets a different experience level, so it's important to pick the right one based on where you are in your career.
Every exam includes 50 questions with a set time limit. Each exam has a different passing mark — the minimum number of correct answers needed to pass.
Adobe Commerce Certified Professional
The Professional tier is for developers with a foundational understanding of Magento who want to validate their knowledge. If you work on a Magento team and can handle straightforward projects (or even lead simple ones), this is the right starting point.
| Number | Exam Name | Passing Mark | Duration | Cost | Cost (India) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AD0-E712 | Business Practitioner | 30/50 | 100 minutes | $125 USD | $95 USD |
| AD0-E724 | Developer | 39/50 | 100 minutes | $125 USD | $95 USD |
| AD0-E721 | Front-End Developer | 33/50 | 100 minutes | $125 USD | $95 USD |
Tip: The Developer Professional (AD0-E724) has the highest passing mark of any Professional exam at 39/50, so don't underestimate it. Check out our Adobe Commerce Developer Professional Certification Prep course to help you prepare.
Adobe Commerce Certified Expert
The Expert tier is for developers with advanced Magento skills who work independently on complex projects and mentor less experienced teammates.
| Number | Exam Name | Passing Mark | Duration | Cost | Cost (India) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AD0-E708 | Business Practitioner | 31/50 | 100 minutes | $225 USD | $150 USD |
| AD0-E725 | Developer | 33/50 | 100 minutes | $225 USD | $150 USD |
| AD0-E720 | Front-End Developer | 29/50 | 100 minutes | $225 USD | $150 USD |
Adobe Commerce Certified Master
The Master tier is the highest level of Magento certification. It's designed for developers who lead complex projects, plan advanced architecture, and can mentor anyone on their team. There is currently only one Master-level exam: the Architect certification.
| Number | Exam Name | Passing Mark | Duration | Cost | Cost (India) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AD0-E722 | Architect | 30/50 | 100 minutes | $225 USD | $150 USD |
The Architect Master exam is extremely difficult. It covers heavy topics like GraphQL, message queues, and integration testing. If you're preparing for it, these resources will help:
- The Art of GraphQL in Magento 2 (premium course)
- Magento Message Queues with RabbitMQ (premium course)
- Integration Testing (official documentation)
How Much Does Magento Certification Cost?
Certification costs depend on the exam tier and your location:
- Professional-level exams: $125 USD (or $95 USD in India)
- Expert- and Master-level exams: $225 USD (or $150 USD in India)
Each attempt requires a separate fee, so preparation is important to avoid paying for retakes. Note that Adobe may adjust these prices over time — always check the Adobe certification portal for the latest pricing.
Retake Policy
If you don't pass on your first try, you can retake the exam after waiting 24 hours. If you fail again, subsequent attempts require a 14-day waiting period between each retake. The good news is that questions are randomly selected from a large pool, so each attempt will have a different set of questions.
How to Become a Magento Certified Developer
Becoming Magento certified doesn't require a college degree, and there are no official prerequisites. That said, the exams are genuinely difficult — you need hands-on experience working with Magento in real-world projects, not just textbook knowledge. This means working with clients, understanding the framework's inner workings, and knowing how to debug complex scenarios.
Here's a practical roadmap to certification:
- Learn the fundamentals. Start with a strong foundation in PHP and JavaScript, the two primary languages Magento is built on. You'll also need to understand XML for Magento's configuration files, but if you know HTML, you can pick up XML along the way.
- Build custom modules. Get comfortable creating modules and modifying core functionality — this is the bread and butter of Magento development.
- Get real-world experience. There's no substitute for working on actual Magento projects. The exam tests practical knowledge that comes from hands-on work.
- Study with structured courses. The Magento 2 Coding Kickstart covers all the core concepts, and the Adobe Commerce Developer Professional Certification Prep course is specifically designed to help you pass the AD0-E724 exam.
- Take the exam. Choose the certification level that matches your experience and schedule your exam through Adobe's portal.
- Stay certified. Keep your certification active by completing renewal requirements before it expires.
If you're new to Magento, it can feel overwhelming at first. But with dedicated study and the right resources, it's absolutely achievable. Many of my students at M.academy have gone on to pass their certification exams after working through the coursework.
Is Magento Certification Worth It?
Short answer: yes, especially if you're looking to advance your career in e-commerce development.
Here's why getting certified matters:
- Credibility with employers and merchants. A certification proves you've been tested on real Magento skills. When a merchant or agency is choosing between developers, the certified one has a clear advantage.
- Better job opportunities and earning potential. Certified developers are in demand. Many job postings specifically list Adobe Commerce certification as a preferred or required qualification.
- Staying current. The certification process (and renewals) force you to keep up with platform changes and best practices, which makes you a better developer overall.
- Professional recognition. Being part of the certified community sets you apart from the thousands of developers who claim Magento experience but haven't validated it.
I also made a video covering some of the hidden advantages of Adobe's Magento 2 certifications that aren't immediately obvious.
Adobe Commerce Certification Renewals
Adobe Commerce certification renewals are free. You can renew by completing an Adobe Experience League course and passing a set of related assessments — no need to retake the full exam. If you hold multiple certifications, completing a single set of renewal requirements will renew all of them.
Note: Adobe has periodically paused and updated the renewal process, so check the Adobe Commerce Certification Renewal Path page for the most current renewal requirements and deadlines.
Verifying Magento Certifications
Once you pass a certification exam, you'll receive a digital badge from Credly along with a shareable link. This lets employers and clients verify your credential through a trusted third party. There's currently no public directory to search for certified individuals, so it's up to you to display your badge on your resume, LinkedIn, and other profiles.
Adobe also maintains a database of certified partners — the number of certified employees at an agency directly affects their partner status. You can browse the Adobe Commerce Partners directory and filter by location, industry, partner level, or company size.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the Magento certification exam?
The exams are genuinely challenging. The Professional Developer exam (AD0-E724) requires 39 out of 50 correct answers (78%), which is the highest passing mark of any Professional-level cert. The Expert and Master exams test deep, practical knowledge that's difficult to pass without real-world project experience. Most developers who fail underestimate how specific the questions can be.
How long should I study for the Magento certification?
It depends on your experience level. A developer with 1-2 years of hands-on Magento experience might need 4-8 weeks of focused study for the Professional exam. For the Expert exam, plan on at least 2-3 months if you have solid experience. The Master Architect exam can take 6+ months of preparation even for senior developers.
Can I take the Magento certification exam online?
Yes. Adobe offers online proctored exams that you can take from home, as well as in-person options at testing centers. The online option uses a proctoring service that monitors your screen and webcam during the exam.
What happens if I fail the exam?
You can retake it after 24 hours, and you'll need to pay the exam fee again. After a second failure, you'll need to wait 14 days between each subsequent attempt. Since questions are pulled from a large pool, every attempt will have a different set of questions.
Do Magento certifications expire?
Yes, certifications need to be renewed periodically. Adobe currently offers free renewals through Adobe Experience League courses and assessments. Check Adobe's certification renewal page for current renewal timelines and requirements.
