Install the Xdebug helper browser plugin for Chrome and PhpStorm in Docker
Learn how to configure a browser debugging extension to initiate Xdebug sessions with your preferred IDE.
Lesson Content
Xdebug needs a way to know which requests should trigger a debugging session. You can set the required cookie or POST and GET values manually, but the Xdebug helper plugin sets them for you.
Search for xdebug helper chrome in Google. The first result is the Xdebug helper for Chrome. If you use Firefox or Safari, equivalent browser extensions are available for those browsers.
Click Add to Chrome, and then click Add extension. Chrome adds the Xdebug helper to the browser, and you’ll see its bug icon in the browser toolbar.
Right-click the bug icon and select Options. Scroll down to the IDE Key setting. Select PhpStorm from the dropdown. The extension sets PHPSTORM as the session key that Xdebug uses to identify PhpStorm.
Click Save, and then return to your Magento installation and refresh the page.
Chrome may hide the extension icon. If you don’t see it, click the puzzle icon in the browser toolbar and select Xdebug Helper. Click Debug. The bug icon turns green, which indicates that the extension is setting the Xdebug cookies for the current session.
You can also pin Xdebug Helper to the browser toolbar so the bug icon remains visible. With the cookies being set automatically, the browser is ready to establish Xdebug connections with PhpStorm.
