Best Way to Pass the Adobe Commerce Certification in 2026

Best Way to Pass the Adobe Commerce Certification in 2026

A practical guide to passing the Adobe Commerce (Magento) certification exam on your first try, with the best study resources, preparation strategies, and courses to get you there.

The best way to pass the Adobe Commerce Developer Professional exam (AD0-E724) is to combine hands-on module-building experience with a prep course that includes practice exams and answer explanations. You need 39 out of 50 questions correct, so plan for focused study on the areas the exam covers instead of reviewing everything equally.

I'm 6x Adobe Commerce certified and have worked with Magento for over 15 years. Some developers pass on their first try. Some don't. The difference almost never comes down to raw talent. It comes down to how they studied. If you're still building your foundation, start with how to learn Magento and come back here when you're ready to prepare for the exam.

AD0-E724 has a 78% passing mark, the highest of any Adobe Commerce developer exam. You can't wing it. Plenty of developers pass it on the first attempt, and they all prepared the same way: hands-on code first, practice exams second. (For every exam code, cost, retake rule and renewal detail, see the Magento certification guide.)

Here's what actually works.

Best Certification Prep Course

The Adobe Commerce Developer Professional Certification Prep (AD0-E724) course is built specifically for the AD0-E724 exam. It uses bite-sized lessons, practice exams that mirror the real format, and full answer explanations so you know why each answer is correct, not just which one to pick.

If you only do one thing to prepare, do the practice exams in this course, then go back over every answer you missed.

Understand What the Exam Actually Tests

Before you start studying, you need to understand what you're up against. Adobe bases AD0-E724 on Adobe Commerce 2.4.7 and splits the official objectives into three sections:

  • Architecture (52%) -- module file structure, CLI commands, cron, indexers, plugins, preferences and observers, URL rewrites, caching, stores and websites, the admin code architecture, attributes and attribute sets
  • Customizations (36%) -- working with the catalog, checkout and sales, manipulating entity types programmatically (EAV), data flow in and out of Adobe SaaS services, and API features
  • Adobe Commerce Cloud (12%) -- Cloud architecture, project setup and configuration, and the Cloud CLI tool

Architecture is more than half the exam, so weight your study time the same way. And don't skip the Cloud section just because you deploy on-prem. 12% is six questions, and that can be the difference between 38 and 39.

The questions are specific. They don't ask you to explain concepts in the abstract. They present real scenarios and ask what you'd do. That means you need hands-on experience, not just theoretical knowledge.

Build a Real Study Plan

Most developers who fail make the same mistake: they study everything equally. Don't do that. Here's a better approach. The time ranges are a rough guide, and your own pace depends on how much Magento you already know:

Phase 1: Shore Up Your Foundations (about 2 weeks of part-time study)

If you have gaps in core Magento concepts, fill them first. You can't answer architecture questions if you don't understand how Magento processes a request.

The Magento 2 Coding Kickstart covers modules, plugins, observers, dependency injection, and database schemas. If you're already comfortable building custom modules, you can skim this. If not, work through it completely.

For a deeper understanding of Magento's architecture, read through our article on the Magento 2 request-response lifecycle. This is the kind of knowledge the exam tests heavily.

Phase 2: Go Deep on Weak Areas (2 to 3 weeks)

Everyone has weak spots. For most developers, it's one of these:

Frontend and layout XML: If you're primarily a backend developer, the layout and UI questions can trip you up.

The Magento 2 Power Theming course covers the entire frontend rendering pipeline, from layout XML to template overrides. You don't need to know every detail, but you need to understand how blocks, containers, and templates work together.

Admin grids and forms: The exam tests UI Component knowledge, which is one of the most confusing areas of Magento.

Transform Magento 2 Admin Grids & Forms walks through building admin interfaces with UI Components. Even if you don't finish the whole course, the first half covers what the exam expects you to know.

Phase 3: Practice Exams and Review (about 1 week)

This is where the certification prep course pays for itself. The practice exams simulate real exam conditions, and the answer explanations fill in any remaining gaps.

Go through each practice exam, review every wrong answer, and revisit the relevant lessons. Don't just memorize answers. Understand the reasoning, because the real exam will present the same concepts from different angles.

Essential Knowledge You Can't Skip

Some topics come up on nearly every version of the exam. Make sure you're solid on all of these:

Dependency Injection and the Object Manager

Magento's DI system is fundamental to everything. You need to understand constructor injection, the di.xml configuration, and why you should never use the Object Manager directly. Our article on the Object Manager in Magento 2 covers this in detail.

Plugins and Observers

Know the difference between before, after, and around plugins. Know when to use a plugin vs. an observer. Know the execution order. Our article on plugins, interceptors, and event observers breaks this down clearly.

Configuration Fallback

Understanding how Magento resolves configuration at the default, website, and store view levels is a common exam topic. Check out our article on Magento's configuration settings fallback process.

Design Patterns

The exam expects you to recognize patterns like the Repository pattern, Factory pattern, and Proxy pattern. These aren't trick questions, but you need to know when and why each pattern is used.

The Magento 2 Design Patterns: Proxies course covers one of the most commonly tested patterns. For the Repository pattern, see our article on the Model Repository design pattern.

Best Value for Full Exam Prep

If you're planning to work through multiple courses to prepare, M.academy University gives you access to every course for a single subscription. If you need more than one of these courses, the University includes all of them, the certification prep course too.

Exam Day Tips

A few practical things that make a difference:

  • Read every question twice. The exam uses precise language. A single word can change which answer is correct.
  • Eliminate obviously wrong answers first. Most questions have at least one answer that's clearly incorrect. Narrowing it down to two or three options improves your odds significantly.
  • Flag and move on. If a question stumps you, flag it and come back. Don't burn 5 minutes on one question when you could answer three others in that time.
  • Trust your experience. If you've built real Magento modules, many questions will feel familiar. The exam tests practical knowledge, and real-world experience is the best preparation you can have.

Is Certification Worth It?

Whether it's worth it (and every exam, cost, retake rule and renewal detail) is covered in the Magento certification guide.

Your Path to Certification

Here's the shortest path for most developers:

  1. Magento 2 Coding Kickstart -- solidify your fundamentals
  2. Adobe Commerce Developer Professional Certification Prep (AD0-E724) -- focused exam prep with practice tests
  3. Fill gaps with Theming, Admin Grids & Forms, or Design Patterns as needed
  4. Take the exam -- schedule it before you feel 100% ready, because you'll never feel 100% ready

The developers who pass aren't the ones who studied the longest. They're the ones who studied the right things and practiced with real exam questions. If you've sat the exam recently, I'd like to hear which section surprised you most.
